I found this little critter slithering along early in the spring on my basement floor. It’s a harmless Garden/Garter snake. They are venomous but can’t deliver a serious amount of venom. Anyway, I’m quicker than a snake so I grabbed him and took him out to the yard.
Part of living in Suburbia in Bucks County is the ‘oneness with nature’. I’m on 2 1/2 acres so I see a lot of wildlife: Deer, Groundhogs, Possums, Raccoons, Fox, Hawks, Vultures, Turkey and yes, Snakes.
Garter snakes were long thought to be nonvenomous, but discoveries in the early 2000s revealed that they in fact produce a neurotoxic venom.[8] Despite this, garter snakes cannot seriously injure or kill humans with the small amounts of comparatively mild venom they produce, and they also lack an effective means of delivering it .
